MELAKA, July 22 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government will begin implementing QR code tags for livestock next year to track ownership and curb road accidents caused by free-roaming animals, State Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said today.
The system, primarily targeting cattle and buffaloes, will enable authorities to identify owners of animals that stray onto public roads and endanger motorists.
Dr Akmal said the state will first mandate manual ear tagging of livestock starting this August, ahead of the digital rollout.
“Once in place, this system will allow enforcement action against owners whose animals cause accidents, injuries or fatalities,” he told the Melaka State Legislative Assembly at Seri Negeri.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Khaidhirah Abu Zahar (BN–Rim) on the status of digital identification systems for stray livestock.
Dr Akmal said the QR code system will be integrated with Melaka’s Digital Village Initiative to create a centralised livestock database. Farmers will be given time to complete training and register their animals with the Department of Veterinary Services (JPV) before implementation.
Responding to a follow-up by Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali (BN–Lendu) on the risk of counterfeiting, he said each tag would carry a unique serial number, making duplication difficult.
“If the animal is sold, the owner must notify JPV to update ownership and issue a new QR code,” he added.
