Wan Ahmad Farid Is New Chief Justice Of Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of Malaysia.

Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court in a statement tonight, said that in line with Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to Wan Ahmad Farid's appointment based on the advice of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The statement also announced that Federal Court Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais has been appointed as the new Court of Appeal President, while Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi will replace the outgoing Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak.

“The presentation of the instrument of appointment and the taking of oath of office and loyalty before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong will be held on July 28 at Istana Negara,” the statement read.

Wan Ahmad Farid, 62, is taking over as the 17th Chief Justice following the retirement of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat on July 2.

Abu Bakar, 63, on the other hand, will fill the post of Court of Appeal president left vacant by Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, who retired on July 3, while Azizah, 63, will be replacing Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who is set to retire on July 25.
