KUALA NERUS, June 16 (Bernama) -- The public has been advised not to use the abandoned barge in the Pantai Seberang Takir area here as a water recreation spot.
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) pro vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mohd Fadzil Mohd Akhir said such activities can pose a danger considering the sea conditions that can change suddenly.
Mohd Fadzil, who is an expert in the field of oceanography, said strong winds and currents can result in big waves that can threaten lives.
"I saw a viral video on social media showing people having fun for the past few days by climbing onto the barge and jumping off it (into the water).
"The barge has been stranded for a long time… It is understood that it is in the process of being moved as it is not usable anymore. What is concerning is that some people are treating it as a water recreation spot without considering the danger that awaits," he said when contacted today.
In this regard, he urged the authorities to take immediate action by conducting monitoring or preventive measures to ensure the safety of visitors in the area.
"Even at regular beaches, we put up flags as indicators of whether the area is safe for swimming or not. Especially in such conditions, swift action must be taken to avoid any unwanted incidents," he added.
