Malaysia Participates In Conference On Glaciers' Preservation In Dushanbe, Tajikistan

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is among the 115 countries taking part in the inaugural High-Level Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, aimed at catalysing international collaboration and action for sustainable glacier preservation.

In a statement, the Tajikistan Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said the three-day conference will begin on Thursday.

“Tajikistan hopes this high-level conference will draw global attention to the urgent issue of glacier melting and help strengthen international cooperation, funding, and action to protect glaciers and water resources,” the statement read.

Malaysia will be represented in the conference by its Ambassador to Uzbekistan,  Ilham Tuah Illias, who is also concurrently accredited to the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan. 

Ilham Tuah, when contacted, confirmed his attendance. 

Also representing Malaysia is Dr Muhammad Hafeez Jeofry, an expert on polar ice sheets and environmental geoscientist who is also a lecturer from the Faculty of Science and Marine Environment of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.

Muhammad Hafeez said he will be presenting a paper titled ‘Antarctic Ice-Sheet Melting and 21st Century Sea Level Projections on Southeast Asia: Malaysia’s Role in Polar Research.’

“I will be presenting at one of the plenary sessions. Briefly, I will be presenting on sea level rise and how glacier melt can contribute to the rise in sea levels throughout the 21st century,” he told Bernama.
