29/07/2016 07:11 PM
MIRI, July 29 (Bernama) -- Miri the first non-capital city in the country being accorded city status will study the success of Kota Kinabalu City in Sabah as its model to further enhance its tourism sector, said newly appointed Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

"Kota Kinabalu can be our model and it's my hope that Miri City will one day be as vibrant and dynamic as Kota Kinabalu, if not better," he said at the swearing in of the mayor, deputy mayor and 32 councillors here today.

Yii said Miri City had advantages in terms of cultural diversity compared to other cities in the country such as having more lesser known ethnic group like Kelabit, Saban, Barawang, Kayan and Kenyah that could give a city unique identity.

Yii, who is the city's third mayor since it was elevated to a city status in May 2005, said Miri City had good linkages to Mulu Caves which was a world heritage site, Niah Caves, and the Bario which can be a premium highland resort destination

"These are some of our tourist assets that we will fully capitalise on, Miri City Council (MCC) will immediately start to organise and compile all these tourist assets and start to aggressively promote tourism for Miri"," he said.

He pledged to try solve chronic traffic jams in many parts of the city, the indiscriminate parking, environmental and rubbish pollution woes, security, animal cruelty problems and squatters.

Sarawak Local Goverment Minister Datuk Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian in his speech had targeted 2030 for Miri City to be a Liveable City.

The 60-year old Yii who holds a degree in Geology from Universiti Malaya (UM) replaced lawyer Lawrence Lai Yew Son who was the city mayor from 2009 until June 30, 2016.

Miri City's first mayor, Datuk Wee Han Wen was appointed after Miri was elevated to city status on May 20, 2005.

Besides Yii, there will be a new deputy mayor for Miri City, namely Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) Piasau chairman Julaihi Mohamad, an accountant, replacing Mohd Chee Kadir who was elected Kabong assemblyman in the May 7 state election.
