KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- The 2026 Cross-Strait (Fuzhou) Fisheries Week has opened in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, with the event positioning itself as a major international platform for marine fisheries innovation, trade and cooperation.

The five-day event, held at the Fuzhou Strait International Conference and Exhibition Center under the theme "Land of Blessings, Fisheries Connecting the World", is being staged for the first time with participation spanning all six continents, marking a new milestone in its international reach.

Jointly hosted by the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Government, the Fujian Provincial Department of Ocean and Fisheries, and the China Fisheries Association, the programme is co-organised with multiple provincial and municipal industry bodies. It features four thematic pillars covering scientific innovation, cross-strait integration, partnership connection and sustainable development.

This year’s edition introduces 23 specialised programmes, an increase from the previous year, showcasing developments across Fujian’s marine fisheries sector.

The organising committee said in a statement that the event has attracted representatives from over 30 countries, along with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and overseas research institutions.

A key feature of the 2026 edition is the adoption of a “phygital” format, combining physical and digital engagement. This includes a 3D online platform designed for continuous global access, as well as an interactive digital fisheries initiative enabling public participation in stock enhancement education.

The event is also hosting forums focused on marine economy development, cross-strait fisheries integration, China–Southeast Asia cooperation and deep-sea aquaculture, with discussions centred on digitalisation and the transition of traditional fisheries towards data-driven operations.

Running alongside the week is the 18th China (Fuzhou) Fisheries Expo, which spans more than 100,000 square metres and is being held across a dual-venue format for the first time. As of June 14, the expo recorded 272,500 visits, with on-site retail sales of 531 million Chinese yuan and intended transactions reaching 2.076 billion Chinese yuan. (100 Chinese yuan = RM60.51)

The organising committee said the combined event is strengthening Fuzhou’s position as a global fisheries trade hub while supporting the development of China’s blue economy through expanded international cooperation, technological exchange and industry integration.
