KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s hopes in the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup South Africa 2025/2026 suffered another setback after a 1-5 loss to New Zealand in their third Pool A match today.
It was a second straight defeat for the Speedy Tigers, who had opened their campaign with a 5-2 win over Scotland before falling 1-4 to Japan.
New Zealand asserted their dominance early in the game through a clinical penalty corner from Kane Russell in the 18th minute and a field goal by Dylan Thomas three minutes later (21st minute).
Russell struck again from a penalty corner in the 27th minute to make it 3-0, and Isaac Houlbrooke added a fourth in the 44th as Malaysia’s defence continued to struggle.
Jonty Elmes made it 5-0 in the 51st minute before Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook scored a consolation goal for Malaysia in the 55th.
After three matches, New Zealand currently lead Pool A with nine points, while Japan sit in second place with seven points.
Malaysia remains in third place with three points, followed by South Korea in fourth with one point and Scotland at the bottom with no points.
Brendon Carolan’s squad will play their final Pool A match against South Korea tomorrow.
