WASHINGTON, June 14 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani received complimentary VIP tickets to several FIFA World Cup matches, according to the New York Post, which cited his representatives, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
Mayorial spokesperson Dora Pekec confirmed to the publication that Mamdani had received exclusive tickets to several World Cup matches for free, while insisting that everything was done legally.
"Given the unique nature of the World Cup and the once-in-a-generation opportunity for New York City to serve as a host city, the mayor will attend select matches at [MetLife Stadium] in his official capacity to perform official functions as the chief executive of the host city," Pekec said.
The spokesperson added that Mamdani had contractual obligations to attend matches with the New York and New Jersey 2026 World Cup Host Committee. According to the agreement, he was also obligated to attend Saturday's Brazil vs. Morocco game, where he was accompanied by his wife, Rama Duwaji, who had purchased the ticket herself.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held for the first time with 48 national teams across three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament will conclude on July 19.
