LAHAD DATU, June 3 (Bernama) -- An elderly man who was reported missing while searching for bird's nests in Gua Tepadung last week has been found safe by plantation workers near an oil palm plantation here.

Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station chief Sumsoa Rashid said the plantation manager had contacted the fire department to inform them of the victim's whereabouts.

"The fire brigade team went to the location where the victim, Ismail Ibrahim, 61, was found to verify the matter, and he was in safe but weak condition," he told Bernama today.

It was reported that Ismail went missing while searching for bird's nests together with two friends in Gua Tepadung on May 26, and efforts to find the victim were carried out independently but hit a dead end.

After police received a report regarding the victim's disappearance last Sunday, the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the Malaysian Civil Defence Force launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation.

Today, the SAR was intensified with the deployment of the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) to conduct a thorough inspection of the interior of the cave.
