Performances At Malaysia Masters Fall Short Of Expectations - Tengku Zafrul

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz described the performances of BAM players at the 2026 Malaysia Masters as falling short of expectations.

He said excuses were no longer sufficient, and all parties involved needed to undergo a reset by focusing on fundamental aspects such as discipline, consistency, and the mentality required to compete and win at the highest level.

He added that BAM would implement improvements, including refining training approaches and strengthening focus ahead of upcoming tournaments.

“Everyone must take responsibility - players, coaches, and management. In elite sports, a big name alone is not enough. Performance must be consistent.

“Keep fighting. We are not done yet,” he said in a post on his Instagram account today.

Earlier, none of BAM’s representatives managed to reach the final of the 2026 Malaysia Masters after national men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King were eliminated in the semi-finals on Saturday.

The outcome was in stark contrast to last year’s edition, when two Malaysian representatives - Aaron-Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the men’s doubles event - reached the final, with Wei Chong-Kai Wun emerging as champions.
