SINGAPORE, May 22 (Bernama) -- Travellers plying the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints can expect very heavy traffic during the upcoming festive celebrations and school holidays, Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Friday.
In a statement, ICA said travellers can expect heavy congestion at both land checkpoints during Hari Raya Aidiladha, the Vesak Day weekend and the June school holidays from May 26 to June 28.
ICA cited the recent Labour Day long weekend from April 30 to May 3, during which more than two million travellers crossed Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, with traffic peaking at close to 580,000 travellers on April 30 alone.
"During the peak hours, car travellers experienced waiting times of up to three hours for immigration clearance due to traffic tailbacks from Malaysia," it said.
According to ICA, the authorities have also stepped up security checks at all checkpoints since Feb 28 in view of the heightened global security environment, particularly recent developments in West Asia.
“Travellers should therefore expect longer waiting times during peak travel periods,” it said.
