BEIJING, May 21 (Bernama) -- China is committed to its role in upholding world peace, contributing to global development and defending international order amid growing global uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, according to Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei.

He said China also continues to uphold an objective and fair stance on issues such as the Ukraine crisis and the West Asia conflict, while promoting peace talks and political settlements as part of its role as a responsible major country.

“The world is undergoing profound changes marked by geopolitical conflicts, sluggish global recovery, unilateralism and protectionism that undermine the international order.

“To address these challenges, President Xi Jinping has put forward the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the initiatives proposed by him,” he said during the opening ceremony of the China International Press Communication Centre (CIPCC) 2026 programme here on Thursday.

Hong also highlighted that China will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen in November, describing it as one of the most significant economic cooperation events in the Asia-Pacific region.

"China would take the opportunity to promote the building of an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future, while contributing towards regional economic integration as well as global development and prosperity," he said.

Touching on the CIPCC 2026 fellowship programme, Hong said participants will travel across various regions in China to gain first-hand exposure to the country’s development and modernisation efforts.

“The media practitioners will witness the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, innovation-driven growth in the Yangtze River Delta, the rapid expansion of the Greater Bay Area, as well as development achievements in western China,” he said.

Participants will also visit high-technology companies, factories, schools and local communities, in addition to engaging directly with the people to better understand China’s economic transformation and social development.

The CIPCC 2026 programme, organised by the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA), gathers 98 media practitioners from 90 countries for a three-month media exchange fellowship in Beijing.

Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) journalist Siti Zanariah Nor Zin is Malaysia’s sole media representative for the programme this year.
