KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 (Bernama) -- The national regu squad stormed into the quarter-finals after topping Group A with a comfortable 2-0 win over Singapore in their final group match of the 2026 World Cup Sepak Takraw Championship here.
In the match at Stadium Titiwangsa, the national side, featuring Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi, Mohd Azlan Alias and Farhan Adam, had little trouble overcoming Singapore’s Muhammad Effendy Khamis, Muhammad Tasman Mohammad Belal and Abdul Hammirruddin Noor.
Mohammad Syahir made three early service errors in the first set, which disrupted Malaysia’s scoring rhythm, but the team recovered to pull ahead before comfortably taking the set 15-9.
The second set saw coach Ahmad Jais Baharudin bring in Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam and Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin, as Malaysia thrashed the visitors 15-5.
Ahmad Jais said the national regu squad started slowly despite winning both sets and the match.
“Overall, at the group stage, the regu team is still at about 70-80 per cent. In terms of momentum, they have not yet reached their best level, and we hope the team will improve over time.
“Service actually requires more precision, and these issues will be worked on gradually so that the regu can deliver better performances,” he said after the match.
Malaysia also defeated Japan 2-0 in their opening Group A match.
In tonight's quarter-finals, Malaysia will meet Group D runners-up the Philippines.
