Six Injured In Five-Vehicle Pile-Up On AMJ Highway

MELAKA, May 2 (Bernama) -- Six people, including a father and his two children, were injured in a five-vehicle pile-up on the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) Highway near the Bertam Malim apartments here on Friday night.

Melaka Tengah police chief, ACP Christopher Patit, said the 11.50 pm incident involved a Toyota Avanza, a Toyota Vios, a Perodua Axia, a Honda Civic, and a Proton Wira.

The victims, aged 15 to 49, included a 45-year-old man who was driving the Toyota Vios and his two children, aged 15 and 17.

"Preliminary investigations suggest the Toyota Avanza, travelling from the direction of Cheng, lost control and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the Toyota Vios in the middle lane heading towards Cheng town.

"The impact caused the Toyota Avanza to spin before crashing into a Perodua Axia in the right lane and a Honda Civic in the middle lane," he said in a statement today.

Christopher added that a Proton Wira in the left lane then collided with the Toyota Vios, which had been shunted into the path of the Honda Civic following the initial impact with the Toyota Avanza.

He said the victims sustained various injuries, including head trauma, a fractured left arm, and injuries to the abdomen, shoulders, and face, as well as chest pains and injury to the hand.

The driver of the Perodua Axia, a 26-year-old woman, escaped the ordeal unhurt.

All victims were sent to the Melaka Hospital for treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police are currently tracking down witnesses and seeking CCTV or dashboard camera footage from the public to assist in the investigation.
