MAKKAH, May 1 (Bernama) -- Emotional preparedness has been identified as a key factor in ensuring the smooth conduct of the haj, alongside the more commonly emphasised physical requirements.
Tabung Haji (TH) counselling manager Azlina Abdul Hamid said pilgrims face a sudden shift in their surroundings upon arrival in the Holy Land, including new weather conditions, routines and unfamiliar settings.
She said this could trigger feelings of anxiety, stress and homesickness, especially among first‑time pilgrims travelling abroad.
“Some pilgrims seem cheerful, always smiling and laughing, but are actually keeping their feelings to themselves. They may be carrying emotional fatigue or a deep sense of homesickness that they do not express.
“We always provide emotional support to pilgrims through counselling sessions, room‑to‑room visits and casual conversations to spot any changes in their behaviour,” she told reporters here yesterday.
Azlina said the proactive approach was important because not all pilgrims came forward to seek help on their own.
She added that close coordination with the medical team and worship guides is also in place to ensure every issue is addressed holistically.
She advised prospective pilgrims to begin preparing mentally well in advance, including developing patience and a more open and accepting mindset.
“When their emotions are steady, pilgrims are not only calmer, but also able to move through each stage of the pilgrimage in a more orderly and meaningful way,” she said.
Haj operations for the 1447/2026 season officially began on April 18, with 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims flying in stages to Madinah and Makkah on 100 special‑charter flights run by AMAL by Malaysia Airlines and Saudia Airlines.
