KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 (Bernama) -- The government has been advised to enact a specific Technical and Vocational Training Education (TVET) Act to monitor and coordinate the quality of the education system more systematically and effectively.
Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) chairman Prof Emeritus Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang said the enactment of the act could provide a major shift in the system to strengthen the implementation of TVET in the country.
"If we had a special act, we could indirectly monitor (TVET). This would be a 'big shift' in the system," he said when presenting a working paper at the 2026 Bumiputera Education Congress at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.
Zaini said the need to strengthen the system was very critical given that the quality of Malaysian technical graduates had now begun to receive high recognition and was being sought after internationally.
According to him, his survey of 15 countries last year proved that the country's TVET graduates had the advantage to penetrate the job market in developed countries such as Japan and South Korea.
Apart from the technical sector, Zaini said local medical graduates also proved the greatness of the country's education system when they were given the opportunity to serve in hospitals in the United Kingdom and Australia.
He said this global recognition was proof that the quality of Malaysian education was now on par with developed countries, thus demanding a paradigm shift and more progressive institutions through strengthening legislation.
