AKM To Expand “Gelombang Aku Kasih Malaysia” Initiative To Strengthen National Unity

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) will scale up the “Gelombang Aku Kasih Malaysia” initiative into a national movement this year as part of efforts to strengthen unity across the country amid the global supply crisis.

AKM deputy director-general (Professional) Shahrir Zaman Abdul Wahab said that in light of global economic uncertainty, efforts to instil patriotism and reinforce national identity through the programme have become increasingly vital to ensure the people remain united.

“The people need to understand the current situation. For example, the oil (price) issue following the conflict in West Asia is not solely due to internal factors, but is instead influenced by external developments that must be addressed collectively.

“Without the spirit of love for the country, we are worried that society may be easily influenced,” he told reporters after the Aku Kasih Malaysia Round Table Discussion here today.

Shahrir Zaman said more than 200 programmes had been implemented under the initiative nationwide from January to April this year, involving various segments of society, with a target of reaching up to two million participants.

“Currently, the implementation of the programme is being carried out through some 18 national training centres, as well as government training facilities. However, we hope for greater involvement from non-governmental organisations to expand its reach to the wider community,” he said.

Shahrir Zaman said the programme, which was introduced last year, has been implemented through various approaches, including courses, forums, workshops and field activities, emphasising the appreciation of the Rukun Negara, the Federal Constitution, and an understanding of the country’s current situation.

AKM, an agency under the Prime Minister’s Department, is responsible for implementing and coordinating nationhood training and leadership programmes across the country, as well as strengthening efforts to foster patriotism, discipline and integrity among the people through a more structured, systematic and focused training approach.
