KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will hold an engagement session soon with various stakeholders to ramp up efforts against online fraud.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the meeting will identify legal gaps and strengthen coordinated action across agencies and ministries.
He added that MCMC is working closely with the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) to tackle online fraud more effectively.
"MCMC is taking a proactive step by inviting all relevant parties to discuss online fraud issues, covering not only ah long activities, but also investment scams, love scams and other crimes that use telecommunication network services such as WhatsApp and Telegram," he told reporters after officiating the Universiti Malaya Health Campaign Focuses on ‘Triple Disease’ programme at IWK Eco Park here today.
He was commenting on a local newspaper report regarding the rise of unlicensed money lending syndicates, or ah long, which use social media platforms and are difficult to trace.
Fahmi said the decision to hold the engagement session was made during a meeting with telecommunications companies and banking associations on April 9.
The session, expected within weeks, will focus on aligning legal provisions that require amendments and developing more comprehensive, integrated action.
In other developments, the Lembah Pantai MP announced a large-scale health screening programme across public housing areas in his Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency to raise health awareness among residents.
Fahmi said the programme will be organised with UM pharmacy students, residents' representative councils, Komuniti MADANI, neighbourhood watch groups, residents' associations, and the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI).
"We want urban residents to check their health regularly so they can take early action before any disease causes greater harm," he said.
He added that a coordination meeting will be held soon to set dates for the simultaneous rollout at all public housing areas, including flats and People's Housing Programme (PPR) residences in the constituency.
