JOHOR BAHRU, April 7 (Bernama) – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the University of Canterbury (UC) have officially launched a joint satellite laboratory aimed at strengthening research excellence, innovation and talent development on a global scale.
UTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim said the strategic initiative with the New Zealand university focuses on key areas including artificial intelligence (AI), immersive technologies, extended reality (XR) and advanced computing.
He said the establishment of the laboratory would significantly enhance both institutions’ capacity to produce innovative solutions with global impact.
“A primary focus of the joint laboratory is developing globally competent graduates and researchers.
“In line with evolving workforce demands, the partnership will facilitate joint supervision, mobility programmes and immersive exposure to international research ecosystems,” he said when launching the laboratory here today.
Also present was UC deputy vice-chancellor (Research) Prof Lucy Johnston.
Mohd Shafry added that the satellite laboratory is expected to accelerate technology transfer and start- up incubation by leveraging the shared international industry networks of both universities.
He said this collaboration also represents a model for cross-institutional collaboration, reinforcing UTM’s standing as a globally connected research hub.
“It also lays the groundwork for long-term societal impact in the rapidly evolving fields of advanced computing and immersive digital innovation,” he said.
Mohd Shafry told a press conference later that UTM also plans to collaborate with UC to upgrade several of its historic galleries using digital technology.
He said the collaboration is expected to serve as a reference model for historic galleries in Malaysia.
“Additionally, we plan to offer a joint doctor of philosophy (PhD) programme with UC. Both parties will benefit, as we require experts to address various complex challenges,” he added.
