GEORGE TOWN, March 17 (Bernama) -- Part of Jalan Tanjong Tokong Lama, Tanjong Tokong here, has been renamed Jalan Shaik Ibrahim in recognition of the contributions of the late Shaik Ibrahim, the former president of Persatuan Melayu Pulau Pinang (Pemenang), to the local community.

Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the state government received requests from local residents to rename the road in appreciation of the late Shaik Ibrahim's contributions to the Penang community, especially in Tanjong Tokong.

He said the proposed road is an existing 124-metre stretch between Jalan Tanjong Tokong Lama and Jalan Tanjong Tokong.

"The application to change the road name was tabled at the State Committee on Geographical Names (JNNG) on Dec 4, 2025, and the State Executive Council (MMKN) approved it on Feb 25,” he said after officiating the new road name here today.

He said the late Shaik Ibrahim was the fourth president of Pemenang, serving from 1930 to 1934.

Based on information from local residents, Zairil said Jalan Shaik Ibrahim had previously been used as the site of a morning market, a night market and Madrasah at-Taqwa in 1925, indicating that the name Jalan Shaik Ibrahim had existed long ago.

Referring to sources from Pemenang and the National Archives of Malaysia, the late Shaik Ibrahim, who was born in Tanjong Tokong, was a philanthropist who contributed greatly to the residents in the area.

He was also a newspaper editor and had been recognised as a Justice of the Peace by both the British and Japanese governments during the 1940s.

The contributions of Shaik Ibrahim's family were continued by his son, Datuk Mohamed Sopiee Shaik Ibrahim, who served as the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) general manager from 1972 to 1974, and by his grandson, Tan Sri Dr Mohammad Noordin Mohamed Sopiee, who is a prominent journalist and a national strategic thinker.

Zairil said the contributions of the late Shaik Ibrahim, along with the continued legacy of service by his son and grandson, have had a significant impact on national development and deserve to be remembered by present and future generations.
