KUANTAN, March 13 (Bernama) -- With a budget of less than RM500, a resident of Kampung Darat, Sungai Ular, has turned his yard into a vibrant display of colourful lights in celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The self-employed 42-year-old, Mohd Azrul Arifin, said he spent seven days decorating his yard to take part in the inaugural ‘LipLap’ Lighting Competition organised by Surau Pok Long Sohor in Kampung Darat.

“I used mostly recycled materials like PVC pipes, rubber, and wires to build the frame before adding the LED lights, and the entire setup cost me under RM500,” he said when met by Bernama yesterday.

A Bernama found that Kampung Darat was aglow with festive lights, with most homes taking part in the LipLap Lighting Competition, adding a vibrant sparkle to the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Sharing his experience participating in the programme, Mohd Azrul said his family members were very helpful, contributing ideas and purchasing new lights to give the yard a lively and festive look.

“It doesn’t matter if we win or not. What counts is celebrating Hari Raya with the family, and this year feels extra special,” he said.

Mohd Azrul said he plans to keep the lights up until the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations, hoping to brighten the village and maintain the festive spirit.

Meanwhile Surau Kampung Darat deputy chairman Mohd Fadilah Abdul Ghani said tthe lighting competition was being held to encourage more villagers to visit the place of worship and to strengthen community ties.

He said that although the idea was spontaneous, the response was very encouraging, with more than 64 houses taking part and almost the entire village adorned with colourful lights.

“This programme has really transformed the village, with decorative lights creating a bright and lively atmosphere at night,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Fadilah said the prize-giving ceremony is scheduled for next week and the organisers are hopeful the programme will continue next year following the positive response from the villagers.
