Govt Cost-Saving Move Timely Amid Global Uncertainty – Lee

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- The government’s cost-saving measures are timely and responsible amid global uncertainties, particularly the ongoing crisis in West Asia that continues to affect economic stability, energy prices and the cost of living, said social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

In a statement today, he welcomed the government’s decision not to organise Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house celebrations this year and to limit overseas travel by ministers and senior officials as part of efforts to reduce public spending.

He said at a time when many Malaysians are tightening their belts, it is only appropriate for the government to demonstrate prudence and fiscal discipline in managing public funds.

“The move sends a positive signal that the government is mindful of the need to prioritise essential spending and ensure national resources are directed towards programmes that directly benefit the rakyat,” he said.

Lee said additional cost-saving steps could also be considered in line with the spirit of prudent spending.

He suggested that if overseas travel by ministers and senior officials is necessary, they should fly business class instead of first class, while official delegations should be kept small and focused to ensure visits are purposeful and cost-effective.

“In addition, greater use of virtual meetings and digital platforms should be encouraged where possible to reduce travel expenses. Ministries and government agencies should also review other areas of discretionary spending to ensure public funds are utilised efficiently and responsibly,” he said.

Lee said such measures would help reinforce public confidence that the government is serious about financial discipline and committed to leading by example during challenging economic times.

He added that prudent management of national resources today would help ensure the country remains resilient and better prepared to face future uncertainties.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that ministries, agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs) will not host Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house celebrations this year as a cost-saving measure following global economic uncertainties stemming from the conflict in West Asia.

Anwar said ministers and members of the administration would also be restricted from undertaking overseas visits, except for engagements that have already been scheduled or are compulsory to attend.
