JAKARTA, March 10 (Bernama) -- Escalating tensions in West Asia were highlighted at the opening of the fourth sitting period of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 2025–2026 parliamentary year on Tuesday.
Speaking at the plenary session, Speaker Puan Maharani said the world is witnessing a geopolitical conflict involving the use of military force, with tensions reflecting international relations shaped by strategic interests, regional security dominance and competition among global powers.
“The conflict between the United States (US), Israel and Iran not only reflects a clash of interests at the regional level, but also illustrates major challenges for global governance in the future,” she said at the parliamentary complex, here, according to ANTARA News Agency.
Puan said the increasing escalation of military actions has led to a collective understanding that the use of military force today has ignored the principle of respect for state sovereignty.
She said the escalation of the conflict shows the dominance of certain countries over others, the neglect of the role of multilateral institutions in preventing a wider conflict, as well as the failure of the global security system to ensure a balance of interests among countries.
This situation, Puan said, reaffirms the importance of strengthening international law and the role of international institutions in maintaining peace, justice and global stability, as well as the right of states to defend their sovereignty.
“The DPR RI supports every diplomatic effort and initiative to encourage all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation of the conflict, prioritise respect for state sovereignty and resolve disputes peacefully.
“At the same time, the DPR RI urged the United Nations to take immediate action to uphold international law, protect civilians and maintain global peace and stability,” she said.
