From A Leaking Roof To A Nation's Freedom

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Bernama) -- A leaking roof once strengthened Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj’s resolve to seek independence for Malaya.

Following the Alliance Party’s landslide victory in the 1955 federal election, the Tunku became the first Chief Minister of the Federation of Malaya, assuming office on Aug 9, 1955 as both Chief Minister and Minister of Home Affairs.

Yet the position did not come with comfort.

He later recalled that he was not provided with an official car or residence. Instead, he lived in a house with a roof that leaked.

One night, heavy rain poured through the ceiling.

“I had to shove my bed from one end of the room to another,” he said.

“It was then that I vowed that I would drive the British out…”

That simple but telling episode, at once personal and political, is among the many insights preserved at the Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (MTARP) in Jalan Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur.

Participants of the Salam Unity Explorace 2026, organised by Yayasan Salam Malaysia in collaboration with MTARP, encountered this story while searching for answers to clues during the treasure-hunt-style competition held on Feb 8, 2026, in conjunction with the Tunku’s 123rd birth anniversary.

But one need not join an explorace to uncover such moments.

A visit to MTARP reveals dimensions of the Tunku that go beyond the familiar images of Merdeka Stadium and the cry of “Merdeka”.

At the entrance, a Cadillac Fleetwood 1959 V8 is on display. Imported from the United States in 1965, the vehicle served as the official car of Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

Its distinctive tailfins and sweeping lines have led some visitors to liken it to the “Batmobile” of popular culture, an unexpected yet striking reminder of a different era.

In the Residensi, where he lived as Malaya’s first prime minister and later Malaysia’s first prime minister, visitors can view preserved rooms that reflect the modesty and simplicity of his private life.

The “Cairo Room”, so named because the chairs were purchased from Egypt’s capital, stands as one such space.

Elsewhere, a preserved newspaper clipping recounts how the Tunku once turned chef for the day, preparing grilled beef for 200 guests at a dinner in Alor Setar in 1982 – a reminder of his warmth and approachability.

Another display captures his wit: “Be good to those you meet on the way up because when you come down, you will meet them again, unless of course you decide to jump down and break your neck!”

There are also personal artefacts, including details as intimate as his identity card number and even information about his pet, small but fascinating fragments that humanise the Father of Independence.

According to the National Archives of Malaysia, MTARP houses more than 80,000 materials related to the Tunku. Located on a two-hectare site, the memorial stands not merely as a repository of documents but as a space of reflection.

It is here that one also encounters the Tunku’s reflections on goodwill: “Respecting people's rights is essential to achieving goodwill. And goodwill cannot be forced by law.”

History at MTARP is not confined to speeches and dates. It lives in preserved rooms, carefully archived clippings and personal recollections, and in the story of a leaking roof that strengthened a young leader’s resolve.

For those who wish to understand not only how independence was achieved, but who the Tunku was as a man, a visit to MTARP offers insight that cannot be gleaned from textbooks alone.

The memorial is open from 9 am to 5 pm from Tuesdays to Thursdays; 9 am to noon and 3 pm to 5 pm on Fridays; and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It is closed on Mondays.
