GPS Focuses On Serving The People, Election Date Not A Priority - Fadillah

31/01/2026 02:11 PM

KUCHING, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will continue to focus on helping and serving the people regardless of when the next Sarawak state election is held, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Fadillah, who is also the GPS chief whip, said the coalition does not work only during election periods but serves the people at all times.

“We view elections as a means of returning power to the people to assess our performance and the work we have carried out,” he told reporters after attending a Chinese New Year contribution presentation ceremony for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) here today.

He was commenting on a recent statement by GPS secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who was reported as saying that Sarawak is expected to hold its state election this year.

Fadillah said the Sarawak state election can be held at any time, including this year.

“This is because the term of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly will end in February 2027, therefore an election can be held at any time,” he said.

The 12th Sarawak State Election was held on Dec 18, 2021.
