TANAH MERAH, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Ismail Yusoff, 24, from Kampung Chawas here, has turned a personal challenge into a thriving business, proving that determination and skill can overcome any obstacle.

Born with a disability in his right leg, Ismail has relied on a cane for mobility throughout his life. Yet, his disability has never stopped him from pursuing his goals.

Three years ago, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced Ismail to lose his job at a smartphone repair shop in Johor Bahru, he found himself uncertain about his future.

Returning to his village with few job opportunities and limited options due to his condition, Ismail could have easily given up. But instead, he chose to take a different path - one that would transform his life.

“I was in a difficult spot, but with the support of my family and friends, I decided to turn my passion for smartphone repairs into a business,” Ismail told Bernama when met recently,

Having learned the trade during his time in Johor Bahru, he started offering his services to family and close acquaintances.

Word quickly spread, and before long, Ismail, or better known as “Mail Totey” was attracting customers from Tanah Merah and surrounding areas.

Today, Ismail’s smartphone repair business has become his main source of income, allowing him to earn over RM1,500 a month.

He charges between RM100 and RM300 for each repair, depending on the extent of the damage, and has built a loyal clientele who trust his skills and dedication.

In addition to his repairs, Ismail receives monthly support from the Social Welfare Department, which helps ease his financial burdens.

The absence of local repair shops in the area gave Ismail the opportunity to leverage his expertise and fill a gap in the market.

Ismail now repairs up to four phones a day, specialising in common issues such as battery problems, screen repairs, and charging port issues.

To expand his reach, Ismail has turned to social media, promoting his services on TikTok and sourcing spare parts from local suppliers.

“I started small, but I have big dreams. One day, I hope to open a larger shop with more advanced equipment. My disability may present challenges, but it will never stop me from pursuing my goals,” he said with conviction.
