Iran-US Tensions: All Parties Urged To Remain Calm - Mohamad

17/01/2026 07:04 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has urged the United States (US) and Iran to remain calm and use existing bilateral and multilateral mechanisms, following heightened tensions due to the unrest in Iran.

He said further escalation will be deeply concerning and detrimental to global stability, as well as have serious implications on world economy.

“Malaysia, as a responsible member of the international community, believes that any move which could escalate tensions is not good at all.

“We do not want (further escalation) to happen because many countries will suffer, not only those in the Middle East,” he said on the sidelines of the 2025 UMNO General Assembly held at the World Trade Centre (WTC) here, Saturday.

Mohamad also hoped that the US would carefully consider its actions to avoid a wider regional conflict that has the potential to spiral into a third world war if not handled cautiously.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister said that Malaysia is closely monitoring proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which on Jan 12 in The Hague, Netherlands began hearing a landmark case brought by The Gambia, accusing Myanmar of committing genocide against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority group.

He said Malaysia’s stance as a member of ASEAN remains clear and consistent, which is to call for an immediate end to the atrocities in Myanmar.

“ASEAN stand is very clear, we would want the atrocities in Myanmar to be stopped. Stop killing your own people … sit down together and bring everybody, all parties, stakeholders together, so that you can put your head together. Then you can have a Myanmar, one Myanmar,” he added.
