Jun Hopes To Shine With As Coaching Style Reverts To Asian Approach

05/01/2026 05:02 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- National singles player Leong Jun Hao is hoping to shine again now that the national coaching style will revert back to an Asian approach.

He admitted to having struggled with the European training approach introduced last year by national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen and his subsequent weak performance, having only managed two quarterfinal appearances from 19 tournaments throughout 2025.

“From young, I have gotten used to what I have (the Asian training style) and it may be better for me to go back to what I have done previously,” he told reporters after a court test session for the 2026 Malaysia Open at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil here today.

Jun Hao’s best showing was champion of the 2022 Indonesia Masters and 2023 Super 100 Malaysia 2023, as well as 2024 Japan Masters runner-up.

He also expressed his desire to beat Wang Zheng Xing of China in his opening match at the Malaysia Masters Open, which begins tomorrow.

Jonassen has been reported to have reverted back to an Asian approach for coaching and training as national badminton players have faced difficulties adapting to the European style he introduced to the Badminton Association of Malaysia early last year.
