KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- Continuous heavy rain has seen the number of flood victims evacuated to temporary relief centers (PPS) in Pahang, Johor, and Kelantan increase as of this afternoon, while numbers in Terengganu have dropped.
The flood situation in PAHANG is worsening as the number of victims continues to rise to 10,956 people from 3,635 families sheltered at 78 PPS this afternoon, compared to 8,226 people from 2,653 families at 69 PPS this morning.
The Social Welfare Department's (JKM) InfoBencana application recorded 8,748 victims placed in 43 PPS in Kuantan, Maran (902 victims in 14 PPS), Pekan (854 victims in 10 PPS), Rompin (423 victims in eight PPS), and Jerantut (29 victims in three PPS).
In JOHOR, the Chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said in a statement that the number of victims affected by floods rose slightly to 356 as of 4:00 pm today, compared to 347 this morning, with three PPS remaining operational in the Mersing district.
He stated that the centers are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pusat Air Tawar housing 148 victims from 36 families, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chiao Ching (139 victims from 44 families), and SK Labong (69 victims from 13 families).
“Three rivers are at warning levels: Sungai Muar at Kampung Awat, Segamat with a reading of 19.87 meters (m); Sungai Muar at Buloh Kasap, Segamat (8.22 m); and Sungai Lenik at Ladang Cha’ah, Batu Pahat (6.99 m),” he said, adding that rain was reported in Kota Tinggi and Segamat, while Tangkak and Kulai were clear, and other districts remained cloudy.
In KELANTAN, the number of victims evacuated in Gua Musang also increased to 137 people from 32 families this afternoon, compared to 16 victims from four families this morning, with one PPS opened in the district.
According to the Kelantan State Civil Defence Force (APM) Secretariat, Gua Musang is the only district currently housing victims, while other districts have not recorded any evacuation.
Several major rivers in the state are also reported to be at alert and warning levels, including Sungai Galas in Limau Kasturi, Sungai Nenggiri in Bertam, Sungai Lebir in Tualang, and Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang.
Following this, the Gua Musang District APM conducted an operation to transport 35 Orang Asli students from the SK Pasir Linggi hostel to their respective homes due to flooding in the area.
Meanwhile, the number of flood victims in TERENGGANU dropped slightly to 902 people from 248 families this afternoon, compared to 913 from 258 families this morning.
According to the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat, Hulu Terengganu became the latest district to be hit by floods, with 18 victims from five families moving to a PPS. Other affected areas include Kemaman (637 victims from 171 families in 12 PPS) and Dungun (247 victims from 72 families in two PPS).
Based on official data, the river water level at the Sungai Besut station has exceeded the danger level, while six other stations have exceeded warning levels involving rivers in Dungun, Kemaman, and Hulu Terengganu.
