Order Of The Rising Sun A Great Honour For Sarawak - Abang Johari

KOTA SAMARAHAN, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, by the Government of Japan on Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg recognises the state’s efforts in advancing green energy and developing a low-carbon economy.

The Sarawak Premier, in expressing his gratitude to the Japanese Government, especially Emperor Naruhito, described the honour as recognition of Sarawak’s progressive policies.

“I wish to thank the Government of Japan, particularly the Emperor, for conferring on me the Order of the Rising Sun.

“I did not expect it, but I was informed of it. This award is not for me alone, but for the state of Sarawak - international recognition of the policies we are implementing, especially in the fields of energy, hydrogen and other (related) sectors,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the 29th Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Convocation Ceremony here today.

Abang Johari, who is also the UNIMAS pro-chancellor, said Japan has shown keen interest in Sarawak’s initiatives on new energy technologies, green energy and zero-carbon footprint solutions.

He also said Sarawak has outlined four key focus areas to be realised by 2035, namely renewable energy; the development of carbon-free gas, including environmentally friendly methane; carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology; and semiconductor development to add value to local raw materials.

In addition, Abang Johari said Sarawak is strengthening its reforestation policy through the use of fast-growing tree species that not only serve as natural carbon absorbers but also as a source of biomass for green energy, an effort that has also been recognised by Japan.

“Our collaboration with Japan proves that Sarawak is on the right track towards a green and sustainable economy. This is a great honour, not only for me but also for all the leaders and people of Sarawak who are working to make the state a leader in green energy in the region,” he said.

The Order of the Rising Sun is one of the highest honours conferred by the Japanese Government on individuals who have made significant contributions to bilateral relations and global development.

Yesterday, the Embassy of Japan said Abang Johari was among the recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations announced by the Government of Japan.
