MELAKA, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- About 1,200 exponents from home and abroad are participating in the 2025 Malaysian Invitational International Taekwondo Championships (MIITC) at the Freeport A’Famosa Outlet Convention Centre in Alor Gajah from Sept 15-18.
Tournament organising chairman Dr John Mohd Abdul Rahim, who is also the Malaysian International Taekwondo Federation (MITF) secretary-general, said 383 categories are being contested, involving the participation of exponents from local and foreign clubs such as Ireland, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
"MIITC 2025 is organised as a major platform to identify new backup exponents, while also providing them with opportunities to gain experience, improve their skills and compete with international athletes.
"When there are world-level youth championships, we can also send these backup exponents to represent the country," he said today.
Earlier, state Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Committee chairman Datuk V.P. Shanmugam officiated the launch of the championships.
The prestigious tournament is also recognised by the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) and has received support from the Melaka government, the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and the Melaka Tourism Office.
John said MITF also plans to organise the World Club Championships in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 in December next year in Selangor, thus strengthening Malaysia's reputation as an international sports destination.
