NILAI, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The Enforcement, Leadership and Management University (ELMU) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) to strengthen efforts to produce ethical media practitioners with high integrity, particularly in crime news reporting.
ELMU vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kassim Noor Mohamed said MPI has long been recognised as the pillar of quality journalism development in Malaysia, adding that the university also shares the same aspiration to train a new generation of ethical and responsible media practitioners.
"Through this cooperation, we will combine academic rigour with real industry, especially in the field of crime news reporting, which has a major impact on society. Crime news is not just about headlines or deadlines, it shapes understanding about justice, safety and social order.
"When reported responsibly, it not only informs but educates, guides and empowers the community. However, crime reporting also demands sensitivity, accuracy and firm commitment towards ethical standards,” he told Bernama after the MoU signing ceremony here today.
Kassim signed the MoU on behalf of ELMU while MPI was represented by its president, Datuk Yong Soo Heong. Also present was MPI administrative council member Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, who is also the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer.
Meanwhile, Yong said the signing of the MoU between MPI and ELMU would open a new chapter in the world of crime reporting, which is not just about reporting, but about breathing new life into crime reporting and enforcement.
He said that through joint training, in-depth workshops and competitions to test mental acuity and the ability to deliver effective narratives, journalists and editors will be empowered to be more sensitive, ethical and insightful.
"This is a new shift because I feel that no one else wants to conduct training in crime reporting. We also see it as a field that can be explored, perhaps with the combination and expertise of both parties, we can produce more exciting, in-depth and ethical news reporting.
"Sometimes people say that crime news is always leaked or the facts are not verified. So, here we see there are methods that we can follow to produce news that is solid and has integrity,” he said.
Yong also said that MPI is always ready and open to collaborating with various parties to improve the quality of journalism in the country.
