GENEVA (Switzerland), July 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has officially announced its candidacy for re-election to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council, for the 2027-2030 term.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil made the announcement during a leaders’ talk session, at the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), here, today.
Fahmi highlighted Malaysia’s ongoing active role within the ITU, including its involvement in Partner2Connect pledges, chairing ITU Study Groups and hosting capacity-building programmes.
“Accordingly, we are seeking re-election to the ITU Council for 2027- 2030. Our goal is clear: to help build a more connected, informed, and inclusive global society.
“We reaffirm our full commitment to working with all partners to scale digital inclusion, strengthen resilience and ensure no one is left behind in this digital age,” he added.
Malaysia is currently a member of the ITU Council for the 2023-2026 term, enabling the country to contribute to shaping the ITU's strategic policy direction, and to represent the interests of the Asia region in advancing telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
The ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for telecommunications and digital technology, which allocates radio frequency spectrum, develops international standards to ensure interoperability of communications networks, and works to close digital divides worldwide.
