JAKARTA, July 2 (Bernama) -- Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry has partnered with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to help small tourism businesses and villages adopt eco-friendly practices as part of a broader push toward a more sustainable tourism sector.
The effort targets micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and includes a “training of trainers” programme held in Yogyakarta from June 16 to 22. It was participated by 22 local tourism practitioners, according to a statement from the ministry.
“This initiative supports Indonesia’s shift towards a greener, circular, inclusive, and job-rich economy,” said the ministry’s Assistant Deputy for Community Capacity Building, Ika Kusuma Permana Sari.
She said 12 participants will be selected as lead trainers to guide 100 MSMEs in the Borobudur-Yogyakarta-Prambanan tourism corridor, a strategic area known for its cultural heritage and high visitor numbers.
The MSMEs involved are from sectors such as accommodation, food services, crafts, tours, and waste management. They received practical training in eco-friendly business models, financial management, and sustainable practices tailored to their needs.
“These trainers are expected to act as grassroots catalysts for change, mentoring businesses in adopting sustainable methods,” Ika said.
She expressed hope that the partnership with the ILO would help build a stronger ecosystem of environmentally conscious entrepreneurs within the tourism sector.
Green tourism has become a growing focus in Southeast Asia as governments and international bodies push for more sustainable economic models in response to climate change and environmental degradation.
