KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Digital is in the process of preparing a detailed report on the legal requirements related to artificial intelligence (AI) to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that a study on AI has been initiated by the National AI Office (NAIO) and will be submitted to his ministry soon.
“(Once NAIO presents the study), we will then bring it to the Cabinet for a decision on the next course of action,” he told reporters after launching the ‘Kita Bagi Jadi Komuniti’ campaign by CIMB Group Holdings Bhd here today.
He said the government will examine whether there is a need to enact specific legislation on AI or simply introduce standards and regulations, as practised in some other countries.
“AI is an area that cuts across all sectors.
“There are certain sectors that require legal provisions due to higher risks and the need for structures that enable specific actions to ensure implementation and so forth,” he said.
Gobind added that there are also AI-related areas that do not require legal regulation but can be managed through the formulation of standards or guidelines alone.
“So in that context, we need to identify and broadly outline which aspects we believe need regulation and the types of regulation required, whether in terms of standards, rules or legislation,” he said.
