SHAH ALAM, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Demerit Points System for Traffic Offences (Kejara) will undergo a major revamp soon, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said the current system was ineffective and largely seen as a failure, as points are only deducted after traffic offenders either settle their summonses or are charged in court - not when the summons is first issued.
“As Transport Minister, I admit that the Kejara system has failed because our approach was flawed,” he said.
“Therefore, I believe the system urgently needs a complete overhaul, and the ministry is currently exploring a new approach for implementation,” he told reporters at a press conference after officiating the Speed Limitation Device (SLD) for commercial vehicles at Scania (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, here today.
The Kejara system is a mechanism for assigning demerit points to drivers who commit scheduled offences under the Road Transport Act 1987 and relevant regulations.
A total of 20 traffic offences, identified as having the potential to cause serious or fatal accidents and pose risks to other road users, have been listed under the system’s implementation.
