Labuan Botanical Garden Unveils New Ecology Track For Nature Lovers

LABUAN, June 13 (Bernama) -- A newly completed ecology track at the Labuan Botanical Garden is now open to the public, offering a scenic and educational route for hiking and walking enthusiasts of all fitness levels.

The project, initiated by Labuan Corporation (LC) in March this year, aims to promote a healthy lifestyle while fostering greater environmental awareness among both residents and visitors.

Labuan Corporation chief executive officer Mohd Sukuran Taib said the track was designed to promote outdoor recreational activities, especially given its proximity to the town centre, and to cultivate a deeper appreciation for nature.

“The ecology track will not only serve as a space for sports and leisure but also offer an interactive experience with nature, allowing visitors to observe the intricate connections between living organisms and their environment,” he said to Bernama after officiating and tree planting at the newly-completed track today.

The trail weaves through one of the island’s most iconic green lungs, the Labuan Botanical Garden, which is home to diverse flora, towering trees, and insects.

Informational signboards and rest stops such gazebo have been strategically placed along the route to provide both relaxation and educational insights into the local ecosystem.

Sukuran added the facility was constructed with inclusivity in mind, ensuring the path is suitable for individuals of all ages, including children, senior citizens, and those with minimal hiking experience.

“We hope to encourage more families, school groups, and health enthusiasts to take advantage of this new addition,” he said.

He said the ecology track project forms part of LC’s broader initiative to enhance public recreational infrastructure and promote environmental stewardship in the duty-free island.

The Labuan Botanical Garden, historically known as ‘Bumbung 12’, began as the grounds of the former Government House, the official residence for Labuan's early governors, built in 1852, and it continues to be a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

Sukuran said the new track is expected to further boost its appeal as a green escape within the city.
