PKR Must Move Forward, Strengthen Grassroots After Party Polls – Fahmi

22/05/2025 10:48 PM

JOHOR BAHRU, May 22 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) must fully utilise the post-election period to consolidate its strength and strengthen ties with the grassroots, said PKR Information Chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is contesting for a seat in PKR's Central Leadership Council (MPP), said this step is crucial in preparation for the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16).

“Elections are the time when we make choices, but there is something even more important – that we must realise what is dreamed of, hoped for, and aspired to by the grassroots,” he said at the 'Grand Finale – Bersama Membina Parti Kita' programme here today.

The programme was also attended by Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is vying for the Deputy President post, Vice President and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and Women’s wing chief and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek – both of whom are defending their respective posts for the 2025-2028 term.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, reminded all ministers and leaders of the party to remain close to the people and not be disconnected from the party machinery at the divisional level.

“The President’s (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) message from the beginning to the ministers was – make time to visit the states. While on work visits, also make time to meet the grassroots, spend time with division chiefs and members, do not isolate yourselves,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nurul Izzah, who is also a PKR Vice President, in her speech asked to be given the chance to shoulder the responsibility (as deputy president)  and set forth a vision to work together with the grassroots to strengthen the party.

In preparing for GE16, she also expressed hope that PKR leaders and members would increase their engagement with the people, including by explaining the party’s policies and programmes for the rakyat (people).

The Deputy President post is a straight fight between Nurul Izzah and incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who is also the Economy Minister.

The 2024/2025 PKR National Congress begins tonight with the simultaneous opening of the Youth (AMK) and Wanita (Women’s) Congresses officiated by Secretary-General Dr Fuziah Salleh.

Both wings will begin their congresses tomorrow with policy speeches by AMK Chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Fadhlina, followed by debate sessions before winding-up speeches by the Secretary, Deputy Chief, Vice Chief, and Wing Chief.

Voting for the National-level Election will also take place tomorrow, covering elections for the Central Leadership Council, AMK Council and Women’s Council, from 8 am to 5 pm involving a total of 32,030 voters physically and online.

President and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will officiate the PKR National Congress tomorrow night.

On Saturday, the congress continues with debates on the President’s policy speech, voting for the Permanent Chairman and Deputy Permanent Chairman, followed by winding-up speeches from the new leadership before the congress is adjourned.
