KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (Bernama) -- Swedish cuisine is mostly associated with IKEA's iconic meatballs by Malaysians, and not many other dishes.

However, the Embassy of Sweden in Kuala Lumpur recently organised a unique luncheon to showcase the broader spectrum of Swedish cuisine, allowing Malaysians to experience the diverse culinary delights of the Nordic country.

"We have noticed that food is a big deal in Malaysia, a country renowned for its countless fantastic dishes. This appreciation for how food connects people inspired us to return the favour by sharing a meal and introducing the diverse tastes of our homeland," said Sweden's Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Joachim Bergstrom, as he introduced the event.

The event was designed to showcase Swedish food culture with a literary backdrop, aiming to bring the diverse flavours of Sweden to the dining tables of Kuala Lumpur.

“The increasing interest in Swedish culinary expressions in Malaysia has sparked a project that seeks to use Swedish literature as inspiration to advocate for sustainable living and food selections," Bergstrom added.

The Swedish food course highlighted the connection of each dish to its landscape of origin and season of the year, serving as a springboard for a two-part literary snapshot.

Each course, prepared by Swedish chef Eric Lichtenstein and Malaysian chef Eric Lee, was presented with a poem and a related piece of children’s literature.

The event was attended by notable figures, including Kelantan prince Dr Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra and his wife Che Puan Sofie Louise Johansson Petra, as well as Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
