PARIS, June 5 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open on Tuesday due to an injured right knee, while Jannik Sinner powered past Grigor Dimitrov to reach his first French Open semifinal.

World No. 1 and 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic withdrew ahead of his quarterfinal match against Casper Ruud after a scan revealed a torn medial meniscus in his right knee.

Ruud, who lost to Djokovic in last year's final, will receive a walkover and face either fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev or 11th-seeded Alex de Minaur on Friday.

Djokovic's injury-enforced exit from the tournament also means that Jannik Sinner will become Italy's first No. 1 in the sport next week. Sinner reached his first Roland Garros semifinal by defeating Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the final four in Paris for the second consecutive year by defeating ninth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6 (3), 6-4. The 21-year-old Spaniard will face Sinner on Friday for the ninth time, with their head-to-head record currently tied at 4-4.

In the women's quarterfinals, reigning champion Iga Swiatek thrashed Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 6-2 to set up a last-four showdown with American third-seeded Coco Gauff, the player she beat in the 2022 Roland Garros final.

The 20-year-old Gauff overcame her toughest test of the fortnight, fighting back from a set down to defeat three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

In the men's doubles, Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen and Czech Tomas Machac defeated eighth-seeded Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
