KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) continues to excel, rising to the 85th position this year from 161st the previous year in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2024.
UTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail said this 76-place increase, the highest in the country compared to other public universities, is a significant achievement for UTM as it enhances the university's reputation as one of the leading public higher education institutions in Malaysia and Asia in the fields of science, technology, and engineering.
He said that the 2024 ranking assessment is based on five main indicators, namely Research Quality (30 per cent), Research Environment (28 per cent), Teaching (24.5 per cent), Industry (10 per cent), and International Outlook (7.5 per cent).
“For the 2024 edition, UTM has shown impressive improvements in Research Quality, Teaching, Industry, and International Outlook.
“Based on UTM's internal analysis, the output and impact of research produced through scholarly publications and innovations are among the contributing factors to this ranking improvement,” he said in a statement here today.
Ahmad Fauzi said that in line with the aspiration to be a research university, UTM places special emphasis on research as a main focus, implemented through the Global University Plan (2012-2020) and UTM enVision 2025 (2021-2025).
“As a result of this university ranking achievement, it must be emphasised that the university community must continue to fulfil their duties to the best of their ability in driving academic and research excellence based on quality and impact, and not make ranking the main goal.
“UTM should act as a developer of the nation, industry, and community, and create excellence in the eyes of the world,” he added.
The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2024 is a comprehensive assessment involving 739 universities across 32 Asian countries.
