SARIKEI, May 28 (Bernama) -- The Bintangor Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) have set a zero-fire target at longhouses under their jurisdiction throughout the Hari Gawai festival celebrated on June 1, by creating awareness among those living in longhouses by distributing leaflets containing information on fire prevention.

BBP Bintangor chief Nicholas Belulin said based on last year’s statistics, there were only two fire incidents reported in the Pakan district ahead of the celebration.

According to Nicholas, officers would be making their rounds to distribute leaflets from house to house (longhouses) and hoped by spreading information to the people, the Hari Gawai festival celebrations will proceed without any incidents of fire.

“There are 10 longhouses in the Julau and Pakan districts that are situated far from Fire and Rescue stations, therefore it will require a long response time to reach the destinations because there are no direct roads leading to the two districts. Transportation is only by ferry or boats,” he told Bernama.

He added that the distribution of leaflets to longhouses in the Julau district had started yesterday, covering longhouses in Rh Jana Saweng, Batu Matup situated 38km from the station, Rh Fabian Unggang Pandang, Jalan Julau-Entabai, Sungai Sapi (52 km) and Rh Akun, Nanga Ayam Jalan Julau-Entabai (48 km).

Nicholas said the locations involved in the distribution of leaflets today and tomorrow are Rh Bidu Buda, Nanga Sangkong (48 km) and Rh Lugum Jenging, Nanga Taba, Ulu Kanowit (63 km) in Julau.

He added that similar leaflets would also be distributed to five longhouses in the Pakan district, namely Rh Bujang, Tebok, Jalan Wak (61 km); Rh Indit Munang, Jalan Wak, Manding (51 km); Rh Kunjan Karin, Nanga Buku, Jalan Wak (55 km); Rh Rachak Padang, Nyalak Ladong (57 km) and Rh Berandah, Nanga Keluton, Entaih (72 km).

Meanwhile, Nicholas reminded villagers living in longhouses to be careful and be aware of the dangers involved when cooking various dishes to celebrate the Hari Gawai festival so as to avoid any incidents of fire.

He said previous incidents of fire at longhouses was due to lack of supervision when carrying out large scale cooking activities.
