TOKYO, May 23 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Sony Group Corp announced Thursday it will significantly expand its animation business by leveraging advanced technologies, aiming to make it a major revenue source alongside its gaming, music and movie divisions.

The Tokyo-based conglomerate will introduce innovative animation-creation software and employ artificial intelligence (AI) to boost production efficiency and enhance the quality of its titles.

"Animation has grown from what used to be a niche genre to a world-class form of entertainment. We want to contribute to the industry," Kyodo news agency quoted CEO Kenichiro Yoshida as saying during a press conference in Tokyo.

The electronics and entertainment giant also aims to improve working conditions for creators amid a global labor shortage driven by the rising popularity of animation.

Hit titles such as "Demon Slayer," produced by Sony unit Aniplex Inc, have fueled this surge in demand.

To expand its animation business, Sony will leverage Aniplex and United States-based animation distributor Crunchyroll LLC, which it acquired in 2021.

The company is also developing new technologies such as 3D content.

"We hope to deliver more Japanese animations overseas," Yoshida said.
