LUMUT, May 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMA) confiscated 61 sets of “bubu naga” fish traps worth more than RM4,000 in the waters of Pulau Talang and Pantai Remis here, yesterday.

MMEA Perak director Captain Mohamad Shukri Khotob said the fish traps were detected by his team while patrolling the area between 12.30 pm and 3.10 pm.

"The fish traps were confiscated at two locations, namely about 1.8 nautical miles southwest of  Pulau Talang and 1.6 nautical miles west of Pantai Remis.  They were detected after the patrol team detected red and white flags and plastic bottles, used as floats and tied to wooden stakes at the location involved.

“Further inspection found that the wooden stakes were used as a marker for the fish traps," he said in a statement here today.

The case is investigated under Section 11(3)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985 for catching fish using unauthorised methods where an offender could be fined not more than RM20,000 or imprisonment of up to two years or both.

He also urged the public to channel information for any violations of the law at sea by calling MERS 999 or the Perak State Maritime Operations Center at 05-6838737 for immediate action.
