KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- World leaders have extended their congratulations to Singapore’s new Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his eagerness to work closely with Wong to enhance the strategic partnership between their countries.
"Warmest congratulations on assuming office as Prime Minister of Singapore. I look forward to working closely with you to further advance our Strategic Partnership," Modi wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang also congratulated Lawrence Wong , as reported by Xinhua news agency on Wednesday.
Li highlighted the strong cooperation between China and Singapore, noting that over the past 30-plus years since establishing diplomatic ties, the two nations have deepened political trust and achieved significant results in various fields.
"This cooperation has not only propelled their respective developments but also set a benchmark for regional cooperation.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, on the official website of the Prime Minister' Office of Japan, also extended his congratulations and conveyed his intention to work together to further strengthen bilateral relations with a view to the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Japan-Singapore diplomatic relations in 2026.
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi congratulated Wong on his appointment in a Facebook post, expressing confidence in Singapore's continued progress and prosperity under Wong's leadership.
He emphasised the strong relationship between Malaysia and Singapore, founded on respect and mutual agreement, and expressed a desire to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including economic development, education, and trade.
"As we embark on this new chapter, we are optimistic about the opportunities ahead and committed to working closely with Wong to enhance the prosperity and well-being of our people," Ahmad Zahid stated.
Wong was sworn in as Singapore’s fourth prime minister at the Istana on Wednesday night.
Wong, 51, succeeds Lee Hsien Loong, 72, who led the nation for nearly 20 years.
