US HOUSE TABLES MEASURE TO OUST MIKE JOHNSON AS SPEAKER

09/05/2024 01:04 PM

WASHINGTON, May 9 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- The US House of Representatives passed a motion to table a resolution offered by Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene to vacate Mike Johnson as House Speaker, reported Sputnik.

House lawmakers tabled the resolution in a vote on Wednesday of 359 in favour, 43 opposed and seven present.

A majority of House Republicans and House Democrats alike voted in favour of tabling the motion.

Greene pushed to oust Johnson from the leadership role after he supported the passage of foreign aid legislation and a surveillance reauthorisation bill with the help of Democrats.

Johnson said in remarks following the vote that the United States needs "steady hands at the wheel" of the House of Representatives. Johnson added that he is proud to serve in the leadership role in the House of Representatives.

US Congressman Thomas Massie, who supported the effort to oust Johnson, said Johnson was supported by former Democratic House speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of the so-called "uniparty".
