KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, will host the Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit 2024: Wilayah Timur in Kuala Terengganu on May 19.

ECERDC said that the summit marks the final regional edition, paving the way for the national-level Malaysia SDG 2024 Summit scheduled to be held in July.

“The SDG Summit 2024: Wilayah Timur has started with the first prelude event held at Laman Warisan Kampung Laut in Kelantan on May 3. It will be followed by two more prelude events at Tasik Chini, Pahang on May 11 and at KampungStay@ Teluk Buih in Mersing, Johor, on May 12, before the summit in Terengganu,” it said in a statement.

The prelude event at the Laman Warisan Kampung Laut, Kelantan, themed, ‘Konservasi Warisan Budaya’ (Conservation of  Cultural Heritage), was in collaboration with the Tumpat District Council and strategic partner the Kelantan Tourism Information Centre (TIC).

“The redevelopment initiative of Kampung Laut as a Kampung Warisan (heritage village) involves the construction of Laman Warisan Serunding and Laman Warisan Seni by ECERDC, as well as the relocation of the 400-year-old Masjid Kampung Laut from Nilam Puri to its original location in Kampung Laut.

“The initiative can also revive the uniqueness of local heritage, art and culture as well as provide a platform for residents to exhibit and market handicrafts such as kites, batik and local delicacies," it said.

Meanwhile, ECERDC Corporate Strategic Planning Division general manager Salida Azizi, in the same statement, said the agency remains committed to conserving and preserving cultural and environmental heritage treasures in the ECER region.

“The relocation of the 400-year-old Masjid Kampung Laut to its original location and the construction of the Laman Warisan Serunding and Laman Warisan Seni provide a special platform for craft entrepreneurs, serunding makers, and local delicacies to be showcased while creating new heritage landmarks in Kelantan,” she said.

She said that the event also involved knowledge-sharing sessions on several matters such as cultural diversity, social unity, peace and security as well as kite-making and batik canting workshops.

A total of 45 participants from the local community and students of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) participated in the programme. There was also a Dikir Barat performance at Laman Warisan Serunding.
