JAKARTA, May 8 (Bernama) -- Indonesia strongly condemns the Israeli military attack on the Palestinian city of Rafah and the control exerted over the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: “Any attempt at forced transfer or displacement of Palestinians, including those from Rafah, is unacceptable as it amounts to an ultimate crime against humanity.”

In a post on its official X account, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday, the ministry urged the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to take immediate action to halt Israel’s brutal atrocities and prevent any further humanitarian catastrophe.

The statement further emphasised: “Indonesia reiterates its call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and for the removal of all impediments to the delivery of humanitarian assistance.”

The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that Israel’s recent attacks on Rafah in Gaza on May 6 resulted in 19 deaths.

On the same day, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) issued a warning that a military siege and ground invasion in Rafah would pose catastrophic risks to the 600,000 children seeking refuge in the area.

According to UNICEF, following an evacuation order issued by the Israeli military on Oct 13, 2023, to move south, about 1.2 million people are now sheltering in Rafah, which was once home to about 250,000 people.
