GEORGE TOWN, April 30 (Bernama) -- The Transport Ministry (MOT) together with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad is offering free KTM Komuter rides for two days in conjunction with the Northern Zone MADANI Rakyat programme at Tapak Pesta Sungai Nibong here.

MOT Land Division principal assistant secretary Shazrina Mohd Hanifiah said the free train services would be available on May 4 and 5, involving journeys from Padang Besar and Ipoh to Butterworth.

She said this was to facilitate visitors from the country’s northern region to attend the three-day programme, which would begin this Friday.

“In addition, free ferry services are provided from May 3 to 5 from the Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal in Butterworth to the Raja Tun Uda Terminal in George Town.

“We also have free shuttle bus services from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Weld Quay to the Tapak Pesta,” she said when appearing as a guest on RTM’s Selamat Pagi Malaysia programme today.

Meanwhile, Shazrina said MOT, as the leading ministry for the Northern Zone MADANI Rakyat programme, would set up a special pavilion housing 15 agencies under its purview alongside local authorities.

They will offer various services to the public, including traffic summons payment counters with discounts of up to 50 per cent.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will officiate the closing ceremony of the programme on Sunday, along with the MADANI Aidilfitri celebration.

The Northern Zone MADANI Rakyat Programme focuses on activities related to people’s welfare, unity, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), career carnival, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, as well as artificial intelligence.

The programme, organised by the Prime Minister’s Office through the Performance Acceleration Coordination Unit (PACU) in collaboration with the MOT and the Penang government, covers the states of Penang, Kedah and Perlis.
