MALAYSIA HOSTS 2024 ASIA-PACIFIC TREE CLIMBING CHAMPIONSHIP

KUANTAN, April 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is hosting the four-day 2024 Asia-Pacific Tree Climbing Championship (APTCC) 2024 that began yesterday at the Pahang Royal Golf Club here.

Malaysian Society of Arborist (PArM) vice president Nik Ikmal Fathi Nik Husain Fathi said 51 participants from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia will compete in five categories, Aerial Rescue, Work Climb, Ascent, Belayed Speed Climb and Throwline at the 15th edition of the championship organised by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), in partnership with PArM.

"Championship winners will qualify for the international tree-climbing competition in the United States in Oct 2024,” he told reporters after the officiation of the APTCC 2024 by Pahang Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man here today.

Nik Ikmal Fathi also said there were certain criteria set for trees used in the climbs, including that they must be disease free and had suitable height.

"We choose five trees for the five categories… one unique thing is that in previous championships abroad, the trees are different, so when they came to Malaysia, our trees differ in terms of their bark and structure making it a new challenge for them,” he said.

Winners are decided by the total of points from all five categories to determine who advances to the Master’s Challenge, where participants are assessed on their technique and capabilities. with the highest man and woman crowned as champions based on their scores.
